How to Check Battery Charge Using a Hydrometer

A battery hydrometer helps measure the charge of lead-acid batteries by analyzing the specific gravity of the electrolyte. Here’s a simple guide:
🔋 What is Specific Gravity?
It’s the density of the battery’s electrolyte compared to water. A fully charged battery should have a specific gravity between 1.260 and 1.280 at 80°F (26.7°C).
🛠 Steps to Use a Hydrometer:
1. Wear safety gear (gloves and goggles).
2. Ensure the battery is fully charged and unsealed.
3. Draw electrolyte from each cell into the hydrometer and read the float level.
4. Compare the readings across all cells.
🌡 Temperature Correction:
Adjust readings by 0.004 for every 10°F deviation from 80°F.
If one cell shows a significantly lower reading, the battery may need replacement.
